A topical look at the week in golf

Tiger Woods says the 17th island hole at TPC Sawgrass, site of the The Players, is gimmicky and should be tucked somewhere else on the course: That's like saying Pebble Beach isn't a good course because it's too windy near the ocean.

Three of the top six and six of the top 49 players named in Golf Digest's list of athletes who are good golfers are from Pittsburgh teams, headed by former Pirates pitcher Rick Rhoden, who was No. 1: Apparently, a lot of their spare time was spent sneaking out to golf courses.

A new $32 million, 77,000-square foot clubhouse with a design called Mediterranean Revival is debuted at The Players: The PGA Tour players needed MapQuest to find the locker room.

Another driver, Callaway's Big Bertha 460 HT, is deemed non-conforming by the United States Golf Association because the club exceeds the limit for spring-like effect: Couple more incidents like this and golf will have more illegal drivers than NASCAR.

A Tennessee woman, upset with drunken golfers urinating on the course near her backyard, videotapes the detractors and gives the film to local TV stations: You won't see Peter Kostis analyzing any of that swing footage.
