District Spotlight: W&J tries to enhance postseason possibilities
Thursday, May 10, 2007

Washington & Jefferson has an opportunity to go where no baseball team from the Presidents' Athletic Conference has gone the past two decades, according to league records -- the NCAA Division III tournament.

W&J (28-10) must win the PAC tournament, then hope to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament because the league champion does not receive an automatic bid.

Last Week Revisited

Highlights from individual and team performances in district colleges last week:

California's Pablo Montana, whose sixth-ranked Vulcans (27-1) are in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, was named the Division II women's tennis coach of the year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).

West Virginia University rifle coach Jon Hammond, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, earned a spot on Great Britain's rifle team that will compete at the World Cup in Munich, Germany, May 28-June 4.

Geneva (28-18) swept two doubleheaders from Point Park to clinch its first American Mideast Conference North Division baseball title.

Penn State Behrend's Nikki Kaschauer, a sophomore second baseman from South Park who led the league with a .477 batting average and 33 RBIs, is the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference softball player of the year.

Washington & Jefferson junior All-American Michael Grasso is one of five players to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships May 15-18 at Anderson, Ind. He tied for 22nd last year.

The 14th-ranked Carnegie Mellon Tartans lost to Denison, 5-2, in the second round of the NCAA Division III team tennis championships. Amy Staloch won at No. 1 singles and teamed with Mona Iyer to win No. 1 doubles to account for CMU's two points.

Top seed and host W&J will play No. 4 Westminster (17-19) and No. 3 Thiel (27-13) will meet No. 2 Thomas More (24-9) today in the opening round of the double-elimination PAC tournament.

The 53-team NCAA tournament will be made up of 33 conference champions with automatic bids, six at-large teams from Pool B (teams from conferences without automatic bids) and 14 at-large teams from Pool C (all remaining teams eligible).

W&J is predicted to qualify from Pool C by d3baseball.com bracketology.

National and regional rankings are something to brag about, but they are meaningless when the committee determines teams to receive at-large bids. W&J is 26th in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III poll and fourth in the Mideast.

W&J's offensive leaders are first baseman Sam Mann (.475, 3 HRs, 33 RBIs), shortstop Nick Fiorilli (.415, 4 HRs, 22 RBIs) and second baseman Chris Varacallo (.405, 2 HRs, 27 RBIs). John Astfalk (7-1, 2.28 earned run average), a senior from Chartiers Valley High School, and Mann (6-4, 2.25) head the staff.

The Scarlet Knights feature outfielder Todd Frazier (17 HRs, 51 RBIs), shortstop David Williams (.395) and catcher Jan Gossard (.326), who has a 23-game hitting streak.

Pitt's leading hitter is third baseman Gary Bucuren (.321, 5 HRs, 29 RBIs), a redshirt freshman from Ambridge who transferred from the University of Kentucky. The staff is solid with Kyle Landis (3-3, 1.77 ERA) and Paul Nardozzi (5-4, 4.02).
