Pittsburgh celebrates glass: Events keep on sparkling

A weekly listing of exhibitions and activities of the yearlong Pittsburgh celebration of all things glass.

Tonight -- 6 p.m., lecture by Heather McElwee, director of education and exhibitions, on the current exhibition, "Allure of Japanese Glass," at the Pittsburgh Glass Center, Friendship (free; 412-365-2145).

Tomorrow -- "Chihuly at Phipps: Gardens & Glass," installation throughout the conservatory by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, through Nov. 11, days and some evenings (timed tickets; 1-888-336-4060 or www.phipps.conservatory.org).

Tomorrow -- 7 to 9 p.m., "Dale Chihuly: Past Inspirations and Recent Projects," lecture by Jennifer Lewis, organizer of museum and garden exhibitions for the Chihuly Studio, followed by dessert and evening admission to the conservatory show. Lecture in Phipps' Botany Hall ($54; members $45).

Through Friday -- Internationally known glass artist Therman Statom workshops with Pittsburgh youth at the Pittsburgh Glass Center. The public is welcome to observe (free; call for times, 412-365-2145).

Saturday -- "Viva Vetro! Glass Alive! Venice and America," 125 works by 60 artists illustrating the flow of technique and ideas between Venice and the United Ststes from the 1940s to the present, Carnegie Museum of Art, through Sept. 16 (admission; 412-622-3131 or www.cmoa.org).

Saturday -- 10 a.m., weekly glassblowing demonstration, Pittsburgh Glass Center ($10, $5 children; 412-365-2145).

Sunday -- 3 p.m., TV program, "Chihuly at the V&A" (Victoria and Albert Museum, UK), WQED.

Monday -- Internationally known glass artist Therman Statom workshops with Pittsburgh youth at Fifth Avenue Place, Stanwix and Penn, Downtown, through May 18. The public is welcome to observe, from inside the building or through the windows on the Penn Avenue side.
