Notebook: Meeting scheduled on outdoor activities

Monroeville will be the site of one of five public meetings intended to carry on a discussion about public participation in outdoor activities that began at the Governor's Outdoors Conference in March. The meeting will held at 6 p.m. June 6 at the Boyce Park Ski Lodge. Information from the post-conference meetings and conference findings will be included in a report to be presented to Gov. Ed Rendell and the general assembly this fall.

Talking turkey

Cory Hoone, 13, of Smithfield, Fayette County, won third place in the junior division of the Grand National Turkey Calling Championships held Feb. 23-25 in Nashville, Tenn. In competition he uses only mouth calls, which he and his dad, Bob Hoone, make themselves. Cory is a seventh grade student at Albert Gallatin South Middle School.

Better birding

Stress-free bird feeding, bird listening tips for bird watchers and becoming a fowl maitre d' are a few of the fun birding topics covered in "Good Birders Don't Wear White." The new book, published by Houghton Mifflin, offers 50 tips from some of North America's top birding authorities, including a chapter titled "Birder or Bird Watcher? You Decide" by columnist Scott Shalaway, who writes a nature column for the Post-Gazette.

The book includes a forward by Pete Dunne of the New Jersey Audubon Society, and half of the essays are illustrated with fun sketches by Robert Braunfield. The publisher says a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History in Jamestown, N.Y.

Wildlife festivals

The DCNR will hold a Wild Resource Festivals Saturday at Moraine State Park in Butler County and June 9 at French Creek State Park in Chester and Berks counties.

Events will include exhibits with live animals and demonstrations, a series of hikes, nature walks, food vendors and musicians. The festivals are free to the public and open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kidstuff

The Allison Park Sportsmen's Club will hold its annual youth fishing contest 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at North Park Lake's Rochester Grove. Children ages 2 through 12 are welcome, and there is no entry fee.
