The Washington & Jefferson College women's track and field team won its second consecutive Presidents' Athletic Conference championship April 28 at Grove City College.
The Presidents captured gold medals in six of the 19 events to accumulate 164 teams points. Westminster was a distant second with 122. Waynesburg finished fifth in the competition, which took place at Grove City College's Robert E. Thorn Field.
Presidents coach Mark FitzPatrick was named PAC Women's Track & Field Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year.
Junior Lauren Weinheimer, a graduate of New York's Lakeshore Central High School, was named PAC Women's Track & Field Most Valuable Player for the second year in a row after she earned PAC honors in six events.
Weinheimer took first place in the 400 meters, with a time of 58.09, and helped the 400-meter relay team set a conference record with a winning time of 49.39.
She also placed second in the high jump (5-13/4) and pole vault (9-61/4), and third in the 200 meters (26.44).
Weinheimer was also on the 1,600-meter relay team, which placed third (4:15.48).
Kelli Gee, a junior from Washington High School, was also a two-time winner for the Presidents. Gee won the long jump for the third time with a leap of 16-113/4.
She also ran a leg on the winning 400-meter relay team, and placed second in the triple jump (35-81/2).
Erin Long, a sophomore from Peters Township, set PAC and school records during her win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:39.32. Long also placed second in the 5,000-meter run (19:14.71).
Stephanie Yeager, a junior from Ohio's Tallmadge High, claimed the discus title with a throw of 124-6. Yeager also placed third in the shot put (32-61/4).
Summer Baumgard, a sophomore from Ohio's Warren High, captured the high jump title with a leap of 5-41/4.
The Washington & Jefferson College men's team placed third in the PAC with a score of 121 points.
The Presidents claimed titles in four events, including two by Curt Jones, a sophomore from New York's Falconer High. Jones won the javelin with a toss of 173-3, then won the triple jump with a leap of 43-91/4.
Virgil Marshall, a junior from Hopewell, and Will Seymour, a freshman from Upper St. Clair, also won titles for the Presidents. Marshall won the long jump with a leap of 22-41/4, and placed third in the triple jump (43-61/2). Seymour won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.69.
Waynesburg College placed fifth in both PAC competitions for the second year in a row.
The Yellow Jackets, who reinstated their program prior to the 2005 spring season, had one champion. Ashley Dodd, a sophomore from Upper St. Clair, captured the pole vault title with a leap of 10-113/4. Dodd has won the pole vault in five of the six invitationals in which she has competed this season.
Brian Lucarelli and Amanda Staudt set school records for Waynesburg during the PAC meet. Lucarelli, a junior from Thomas Jefferson, placed fourth in the 400 meters with a record-setting time of 50.20. Staudt, a sophomore from Cochranton, placed second in the javelin with a throw of 118-4.
Freshmen Melissa Cox and Janet Carson were also second-place finishers for Waynesburg. Cox, a Jefferson-Morgan graduate, finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.05.
Carson, an Ellwood City graduate, finished second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 41:58.00.
Grove City won its third consecutive PAC men's title with a total of 220 points. The Wolverines won titles in six events, including the shot put, which was captured by Bob Perri, a senior from Trinity High School. Perri had a career best throw of 52-8. He also placed third in the discus with a throw of 138-5.
