Weekly report

Lake Erie: Ed Lightner of Shaler and Ed Matusiak of Harmarville released 58 smallmouth bass, including a 7 pounder, on jerkbaits and on tubes in rough conditions past Shade's Beach and around Hammermill on the main lake last weekend. Tubes worked in 12- to 20-feet of water and jerkbaits in 5 to 10 feet. Dave Lehman of Pleasantville also released bass up to 7 pounds this week. A good largemouth bass bite was reported on crankbaits in Misery Bay. Perch and panfish are hitting at the head of Presque Isle Bay, in Presque Isle marina and off the north, south, east and west piers. Anglers are starting to target lake trout in 50 feet in "the mountain," which is deep water straight out of Northeast Marina. A few smallmouth bass are being released in the creeks, especially Elk, although they were muddy and on the cool side at mid-week. A few steelhead were still being caught on the streams this week. Anglers will encounter a lot of suckers. Lower Elk was stocked with brown trout, Monday. The Gravel Pit pond was stocked with trout Saturday.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): The crappie bite is hit or miss, with the best action in "the stumps" near the Sheakleyville causeway. Largemouth bass are being released. Perch are coming into the shallows.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): Water is still on the cold side, but anglers are catching some hybrid striped bass in the evenings. Crappies are hitting all over the lake.

Lake Tamarack (Crawford County): Don Taylor of Fombell released a 36-inch muskie, and Kevin Witky of Butler released 36- and 37-inch muskies casting Glider baits Saturday.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Susan Marfin of Butler released a 29-inch muskie Saturday.

Woodcock Creek Lake (Crawford County): One angler released a 32-inch muskie on a Rapala at the shallow end of the lake.

Allegheny River (Venango County): Last week's good smallmouth bite continued until storms hit Tuesday night. Darl Black of Cochranton released bass up to 4 1/2 pounds Monday.

Oil Creek, Sugar Creek, Little Sandy Creek, Sandy Creek (Venango, Crawford counties): All got blown out by storms Tuesday night. Oil Creek crested at 4,080 cubic feet per second Wednesday at noon. The Grannom Caddis is hatching on all the streams. Oil Creek was stocked yesterday through the park. The upper part of Sugar will be stocked Monday.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Bob Sarnese of Prospect caught a 1-pound, 14-ounce, 13 3/4-inch crappie and a 10-pound, 9-ounce, 27-inch hybrid striped bass with 21 1/4-inch girth while crappie fishing on fathead minnows at dawn Sunday. The crappie bite remains strong. "Wipers" are hitting in under 8 feet, after sunset and just before daybreak.

Allegheny River: A lot of white bass and hybrid striped bass are being caught around the Highland Park Dam. A few small walleyes are being released, along with some catfish. The Venture Outdoors Downtown TriAnglers are back in action Wednesdays near PNC Park. Highlights from Wednesday's outing include a 24-inch channel catfish landed by Tom Lippert of Spring Garden, and two smallmouth buffaloes, 20 1/2 and 24 inches by Rege Fitzhenry of Hazelwood.

Monongahela River: Good action is reported all over the river, especially at the mouth of Pigeon Creek, where crappies and big numbers of white bass are being released. Anglers also are releasing smallmouth bass and a few walleyes.

Ohio River: Smallmouth bass are being released at the mouth of Montour Run. Walleyes and saugers are being released at the mouth of Little Sewickley Creek.

Beaver River: A few hybrid striped bass are being released. George Hinzman of Neville Island released a 10-pound muskie on a white Twister tail near Big Rock.

Mingo Creek (Washington County): Chad Janeski of Finleyville won the Shad Lure Bait and Tackle April Trout Contest with a 10-pound rainbow.

Flaugherty Run (Allegheny County): Al Winkler of Imperial landed an 18-inch, 3-pound brown trout on a Joe's Fly Wednesday.

Peters Township Lake (Washington County): Walter Heard of Pittsburgh caught a 1-pound, 9-ounce, 15-inch crappie with 11-inch girth on a home made jig tipped with a minnow Monday.

Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): John Spittal of Ursina, Pa., caught a 36-inch northern pike on a small minnow near Summerfield while crappie fishing last month. A good crappie bite is reported on the upper end of the lake. Smallmouth bass are hitting.

Meadow Run (Fayette County): A few Quill Gordons and Blue-Winged Olives are hatching, along with big numbers of little black caddises and gray midges. Fish aren't rising much and are taking mostly nymphs and streamers. Conditions are excellent.

High Point Lake (Fayette County): Shore anglers are catching some small northern pike.
