District Spotlight: CCAC South takes lots of plusses into baseball tournament
Thursday, May 03, 2007

The numbers would seem to favor the Community College of Allegheny County South baseball team heavily, but coach Ron Rocco said they do not guarantee the Tigers a thing.

CCAC South (18-1) is 6-0 this season against the other three teams in the double-elimination NJCAA Regional XX tournament this weekend at CCAC Boyce.

Last Week Revisited

Highlights from top individual and team performances in district colleges last week:

Duquesne's Jacqueline Hughes, a senior from McKeesport, was named first team to the Atlantic 10 women's tennis All-Conference team. Duquesne's Johanna Bezjak and Rebecca Poole are on the second team.

Washington & Jefferson's Dave Richards, a junior from Latrobe, was medalist in the Presidents' Athletic Conference golf championships with rounds of 76 and 70 for a 4-over 146 at Oak Tree Country Club in West Middlesex. W&J had four of the top five finishers to win the team title easily.

Clarion's Erin Richard had a time of 16:41.39 in the 5,000-meter run and Tasha Wheatley ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:07.43 to set school women's records at the Penn Relays.

Duquesne shortstop Bill Torre, a sophomore from South Park, is the Atlantic 10 baseball co-player of the week. He batted .615 with two home runs in four games.

Gannon (12-4) remained sixth for the second consecutive week in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division II poll.

Thiel (24-12) set a school record for baseball wins in a season with a doubleheader sweep of Bethany, 3-1 and 3-2.

"I'm not counting on that at all," Rocco said of the Tigers who open against Butler County Community College tomorrow. "I'm glad we won those games, but in baseball two games don't tell you that much."

Montgomery Germantown (Md.) will meet Westmoreland County Community College in the other first-round game. The Regional XX champion will advance to the NJCAA Division III national tournament later this month in Tyler, Texas.

CCAC South was the runner-up in the regional tournament last season in Rocco's first year following a stint as the coach at Central Catholic High School.

"Our kids haven't forgotten that," he said. "They want to get over the hump and go to nationals."

The Tigers started 17-0 before an 11-1 loss to Division II Allegany, Md. this past weekend.

"We've played well considering we've lost 17 games because of the weather," Rocco said. "We've played a few close games, but these kids never quit and never feel like they're out of a game."

The catalysts for CCAC South's offense are shortstop Ron Kramer (.565, 34 RBIs), a sophomore from Woodland Hills, outfielder Josh Shearn (.451, 18 RBIs), a freshman from Bethel Park, outfielder Kevin Cornell (.426, 23 RBIs), a freshman from Baldwin, and second baseman Zack Coleman (.377), a sophomore from Central Catholic.

The leaders of the pitching staff are Anthony Cirocco (5-0, 1.54 ERA), a freshman from Penn-Trafford, and Dan Pfleger (5-0, 6.75), a freshman from Schenley.

"This team knows what it's capable of," Rocco said. "They've done a lot of winning and built up a lot of confidence."

Division III baseball

Washington & Jefferson (26-7, 13-2), ranked 23rd in the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Top 30 poll, will play host to Thomas More (23-6, 13-2) in a three-game series in the final weekend of the regular season with first place at stake in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. W&J's hitting headliners are Sam Mann (.486, 3 HRs, 32 RBIs) and Nick Fiorilli (.454, 4 HRs, 22 RBIs) and Mann (6-2, 1.90 ERA) and John Astfalk (6-1, 2.36), a senior from Chartiers Valley, head the pitching staff.

California's only defeat was 5-4 against Division I West Virginia.

California's marquee players are juniors Inga Chillingaryan, two-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference singles champion who is ranked 11th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, and No. 41 Lisa Santoro.
