Hopewell High School graduate Virgil Marshall was a double winner at the Presidents' Athletic Conference track and field championships, which took place Saturday at Grove City College.

Marshall, a junior at Washington & Jefferson College, won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 4 1/4 inches, then claimed the gold in the triple jump with a leap of 43-9 1/4.

The long jump title was Marshall's second. He claimed the title last year with a jump of 23-3 1/2. He also placed fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 43-4 1/2.

Other graduates of PG West area high schools also performed well. New Brighton graduate Damon Neal, a sophomore at Westminster College, placed third in the javelin with a throw of 166-3. The throw also marked a personal best for Neal.

Ellwood City graduate Joey Cortez was also a bronze medalist. Cortez, a junior at Grove City College, placed third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:16.52.

Good year at W&J

Chartiers Valley graduate John Astfalk, a four-year starter on the Washington & Jefferson College baseball team, is enjoying a strong senior season.

Astfalk has a 17-5 career record, which includes a 4-1 mark this year. He has made eight starts this season and has a 2.57 earned run average, allowing 10 runs in 35 innings pitched.

Langley grad excels

Thiel College junior pitcher Eric Wadowsky earned his second Presidents' Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honor Monday.

Wadowsky, a Langley High School graduate, went 1-0 last week, earning his sixth win of the year with an 11-2 PAC victory against Bethany College. He allowed two runs -- neither of them earned -- on five hits with a career high nine strikeouts in six innings.

Wadowsky has a 2.14 ERA and has 36 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched. He previously earned the same honor for his performance during the week of April 1.
