Text message: Get moving
Wednesday, May 02, 2007

If you're more likely to exercise more or eat less if a stranger bugs you about it, then America On the Move has a deal for you.

Pittsburgh is one of four cities in a pilot program in which people can get daily health tips on their cell phones.

America On the Move is a national nonprofit organization devoted to fighting obesity. It began in Colorado in 1991.

Small lifestyle changes such as walking an additional 2,000 steps (about a mile) each day, or consuming the equivalent of a cookie or a pat of butter less each day can make a big difference, said Dr. John Jakicic, head of the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Health and Physical Activity. Dr. Jakicic is the head of Pittsburgh on the Move, the local affiliate of America on the Move.

If you want to get healthy living tips on your cell phone, text GO A-O-M to 50555 to sign up. You'll receive daily tips for six weeks, until June 18.

The other communities taking part in the pilot program are Philadelphia, Houston and Knoxville, Tenn. More information about the Pittsburgh effort can be found under the AOM Communities portion of the home page at www.americaonthemove.org.
