Readers Forum: Where should the Heinz ketchup sign go?
Thursday, April 26, 2007

The lighted Heinz Ketchup sign on the North Side is looking for a new home.

The Pittsburgh ketchup company said work begins today to take down the sign, which shows a bottle slowly emptying and then refilling. [Read article]

Here are some reader comments about where the sign should go next.

Reader comments

I say send it to N.A.S.A.,let them attach rockets and launch it into space.

Like a satellite!!! That way not only we will be able to enjoy it,but through telescopes, the rest of the world can join us in our celebration of the bottle!!! -- Ray F., Troy Hill

The obvious choice is Heinz Field -- and it stays on the North Side. -- Donna Fagnelli, Greenfield

I agree with my dad that the sign should go on Heinz Field. It makes the most sense. It could post the score of the game to those outside, and it could also give important Steeler announcements. HERE WE GO! -- Kim Bauer

We have this brand new western pa history center that we just built??? It should be incorporated on or around it. Or perhaps it gets a permanent home around Heinz field? -- Jay Peffer, N. Hills

If zoning permits maybe it could be placed on top of the John Heinz History Museum in the Strip District. -- Joseph R. Lettrich, New Kensington Pa.

It's an innovative, beautiful sign with local significance. Let's showcase it on top of our highest building: the USX Tower downtown! -- Bram Reichbaum, East Allegheny

The Heinz Ketchup Bottle should go on Heinz Field! -- Mary Gnipp, Houston, TX

How about at Heinz Field facing Route 65 on the big wall towards CCAC. It's not that big of a sign, and what better place than Heinz Field. -- Tim Sharkey

I do not really like billboards, and that is essentially what the Heinz Ketchup sign is, a very shapely billboard. So I would suggest that you incorporate the sign into the new pavement of the Penguins Arena. It could be embedded, and covered with some kind of unbreakable plexiglass so that people can walk over it.

The only disadvantage to it laying flat is that birds will not be able to perch on it, although on the other hand birds would not kill themselves flying into either.

While you're at it, perhaps you could tear down ALL THE BILLBOARDS in Pittsburgh, so that we can enjoy our fantastic panoramic views of the "most livable city in America".

Billboards are an eyesore, and should be torn down and replaced with shade trees. -- Thank you, Jane Hyland

Stick it on the side of Mount Washington! -- Jill Henkel, Turtle Creek

After all the Heinz Ketchup I've eaten over the years they should give it to me! :) If that is not a possibility, Heinz Field is the next best place. -- Gary Hoffman, Gibsonia

As I don't know the legal specifics on how such arrangements work, I'd assume to have it in a proper prominent space it would probably have to be put on property that Heinz does not own.

If maintenance and energy costs are dealt with appropriately, I'd suggest keeping it on the North Side and putting it on that new parking garage. Otherwise, I'm not really sure where it could go...

It really is a shame that it can't stay where it is. My 2 cents, anyway. -- Evan Shirey, North Side

In front of Heinz Field facing the city. -- Carole J. Walsh

They Heinz sign should be put on Heinz field on the outside of the scoreboard. The sign that is there now is small and boring and this would be a great replacement. It also maintains its home on the North Side and is visible to downtown. -- Brad Lando, Squirrel Hill

How about placing it at Heinz Field? Not only would it remain on the North Side, Pittsburghers around the US would see it every Steelers home game. -- Marc McClintock, Seattle, Washington

It should go to Heinz Field where it belongs. -- Donna Charmello

Brighton Heights, Pa

It has to be somewhere near Heinz Field.....would be great if you could view it from boat....the Point, or from Staion Square. -- Ken Bauer

While I will really miss that sign (I see it every day on the way home to Troy Hill), I think it should go outside of Heinz Field! -- Edna L. Henrich

I was born, bred and raised in Sharpsburg "The Birth Place of H.J. Heinz" I think it should be erected somewhere near there or at the entrance from 28 north into Sharpsburg.

My Mother is a resident of Sharpsburg as was I. I was also a 20 year Navy Veteran who is a Plank Owner (commissioning crews) of the USS Pittsburgh SSN-720. My mom's home is across the street from Heinz Terrace where H.J. has his home that is still there. -- Alfred DiGregory

How about putting it on the slope of Mt. Washington for all to see, especially during sporting events which are nationally televised. -- Max Conner, Plantation, FL

I think it should go atop the Heinz History Center. -- Jo Braun, North Side

It should, without a doubt, go on Heinz Field. It can be placed anywhere it can accent the city skyline. Any place on Heinz Field is better than its previous location. -- Jack Bauer, Ventura, California

It belongs at the John H Heinz History Center. That the only place in the city that it could go. Heinz Field would want money and a non binding contract to install it. It is part of Pittsburgh's History so it belongs in a History Center. And the John Heinz History Center is the only logical choice. -- Paul E Kaup, Ross Twp.

i think the best place for the sign is mount washington.this way everyone could see it from downtown pittsburgh. it just something we all remember. -- Lori Jones

The sign needs to be placed in an area that can help to contribute to Pittsburgh staying in the "Most Liveable City" Category. I think it should somehow be incorporated into Kennywood! -- Chloe O'Brien, Los, Angeles, California

The sign should be put up for auction with all of the proceeds going to Katrina relief or even to help clean up our streets. -- Wayne Palmer, Washington, D.C.

Chuck it on a barge and send it dahn' the Allegheny. Come on, people, it's a sign! -- Mark Franks, Glenshaw
