PG EAST: NCAC cites Woodland Hills grad
Thursday, April 26, 2007

Woodland Hills graduate Katie Pankowski was named Women's Field Athlete of the Week in the North Coast Athletic Conference for her performance in the Slippery Rock Invitational on April 14.

A senior at Allegheny College, she finished third in the javelin at the event with a throw of 122 feet, 4 inches. She was the only NCAA Division III competitor to finish in the top nine.

Pankowski is the NCAC's leader in the javelin this spring after posting a distance of 125 feet, 3 inches at the Carnegie Mellon Tri-Meet on April 5, a little further than 3 feet short of the NCAA provisional mark.

She has also qualified for the NCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the long jump, clearing the 15 feet, 7 inches needed by half an inch at Carnegie Mellon.

District duo boost Ohio

Franklin Regional graduate Jeremie Rehak and McKeesport Area alumnus Chris Klimko are starters on the Ohio University baseball team, which entered the week with a 14-23 record.

Rehak, a freshman infielder, has played in all but three games and started in 22. He has a .281 average, 25 runs scored and seven stolen bases.

Klimko, a sophomore catcher, has played in 31 games, starting in 27. He has a .242 average, six doubles, 13 runs scored and 16 runs batted in.

Helping hand at W&J

Hempfield Area graduate Nate Hopkins has helped the Washington & Jefferson College baseball team to a successful season to date.

Hopkins, a four-year letterman and the starting left fielder, is hitting .277 with five doubles, 11 run scored and eight runs batted in.

W&J entered the week with a 21-7 record.

Penn State standout

Kiski Prep graduate Matt Ogrodnik, a Bell Township resident, was named Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Ogrodnik, a relief pitcher at Penn State University, picked up a win and a save to factor into two of the Nittany Lions' three wins earlier this month.

It is the first career weekly honor from the Big Ten for Ogrodnik.

For the season, Ogrodnik has a 2-1 record and a 2.21 earned run averaged in 15 appearances. In 201/3 innings of work, he has struck out 16 and walked only eight.

Plum grad stars at Cal

Plum High School graduate Alex Lefcakis is a starter on the California University of Pennsylvania baseball team.

Lefcakis, a junior outfielder and designated hitter, leads the team with 11 doubles and 28 runs batted in. He also has a .312 batting average, 16 runs scored and five stolen bases.

The Vulcans had a 27-13 overall record and were tied for second place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division with an 11-5 mark going into this week.
