Thursday, April 26, 2007

The graduates of PG South area high schools are making significant contributions to Washington & Jefferson College's successful baseball season.

South Allegheny graduate Mike Trumpower, Chartiers Valley grad John Astfalk and Thomas Jefferson grad Ron Mitko are all in their fourth seasons with the W&J baseball team, which entered the week with a 21-7 record.

Trumpower, a pitcher, has compiled a 19-6 record during his career, which includes this year's 2-2 mark. Astfalk has a 17-5 career record, including a 4-1 mark this season.

"Mike was our best pitcher his sophomore year, but arm surgery ended his junior year midway through the season," said Presidents coach Jeff Mountain, referring to Trumpower's 9-1 record in 2005. "Mike and John have been in our starting rotation since their freshman years."

Mitko has started 125 games during his career, splitting time at pitcher, first base and in the outfield. This season, in eight relief appearances, he has a 2-0 record, a 0.96 earned run average, and two saves. Mitko is also hitting .306 with four doubles, 14 runs scored, and 12 runs batted in.

Undefeated at Wooster

Bishop Canevin graduate Anthony Trapuzzano has a 7-0 record in seven starts for the College of Wooster baseball team.

Trapuzzano, a sophomore right-hander, has a 1.84 earned run average and has struck out 53 batters in 44 innings pitch. Opposing batters are hitting only .181 against Trapuzzano. He also has two complete games.

Trapuzzano made an immediate impact in his freshman year, as he was named to the second team of the North Coast Athletic Conference all-star team after emerging as the No. 3 starter on the staff.

He went 7-1 over 10 starts and one other appearance (552/3 innings), while compiling a 3.72 ERA, which ranked eighth in the league.

McKeesport grad boosts Ohio

McKeesport Area High School alumnus Chris Klimko is a starters on the Ohio University baseball team, which entered the week with a 14-23 record.

Klimko, a sophomore catcher, has played in 31 games, starting 27. He has a .242 average, six doubles, 13 runs scored and 16 runs batted in.

Milestone at RMU

A 3-2 victory against the University of Akron last week gave Robert Morris University softball coach Craig Coleman his 400th career victory.

Robert Morris had a 13-17 record going into this week, including a 6-6 record in the Northeast Conference. The Colonials are in fifth place in the conference standings. The top four teams qualify for postseason play.
