Spinning out Frisbee tales

Here are some other notable facts about the Frisbee:

Ultimate Frisbee was invented in 1968 by a group of students from Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J.

That same year, the Navy spent $400,000 to test the Frisbee as a vehicle for keeping flares aloft.

The Frisbee Dog emerged in 1974 when Alex Stein and his dog Ashley Whippet hopped the fence at a Los Angeles Dodgers game and starting demonstrating their skills. Stein threw at speeds of 35 mph, and Whippet wowed the fans with 9-foot jumps. It stopped the game.

While most breeds can be trained to catch Frisbees, the high-energy herding dogs, particularly Australian shepherds and border collies, seem to be particularly good at the sport.

Frisbee golf or disc golf was introduced in 1975 when "Steady Ed" Headrick constructed the first Frisbee Golf course in Pasadena, Calif., and organized the Professional Disc Golf Association. Locally, you can play disc golf on courses in Schenley Park, Knob Hill Park in Marshall and at Moraine State Park.

John Dwork in 1984 was the first person to receive a bachelor's degree in Frisbee. He graduated from Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass.

The Cub Scouts have an activity badge for participation in Ultimate.

If you lined up Ultimate discs side by side, you'd need 150 million discs to circle the Earth.
