Police called to bomb scare in Oakland
Friday, April 20, 2007

Police reopened Forbes Avenue between Craig Street and Morewood Avenue yesterday afternoon after determining that there was no bomb in a car they stopped on the Carnegie Mellon University campus.

The streets, reopened about 2:20, had been closed for more than an hour after 911 received a call about someone putting a bomb in a white car.

City police spotted the car at Centre Avenue and Morewood and followed it along Morewood before pulling it over in a parking lot off Forbes Avenue near CMU's Hamburg Hall.

Police found a silver cylinder in the back seat of the car and called in the Allegheny County bomb squad. Bomb squad members determined that the cylinder, which resembled a WWII-era practice bomb, was not dangerous. But police were checking out some type of liquid inside the car.

The driver was detained for questioning, said police spokeswoman Diane Richard.
