NFL Notebook: NFL puts cap on Urlacher fine at $100,000
Thursday, April 19, 2007

Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was fined $100,000 by the NFL for wearing a cap during Super Bowl media day that promoted a sponsor not authorized by the league.

NFL rules prohibit gear that advertises any product but a designated sponsor, league spokesman Brian McCarthy said yesterday.

Urlacher was fined for drinking vitaminwater and wearing a vitaminwater hat during the media session in Miami leading to the title game. Gatorade is the NFL's official drink.

McCarthy said this is the first time such a fine has been levied. He added that $100,000 is the standard fine for such a violation at the Super Bowl. A violation during the regular season is $10,000. It is $50,000 at the Pro Bowl.

The fine recalls an episode involving Chicago quarterback Jim McMahon in the playoffs after the 1985 season, the previous time the Bears made the Super Bowl.

McMahon wore a headband that said "adidas" in a playoff game against the New York Giants, and then-commissioner Pete Rozelle fined him $5,000 because the shoe company was not an NFL sponsor.

The following week, in the NFC title game against the Rams, McMahon wore a headband that read "rozelle."

Dolphins

Miami has decided not to match the offer sheet punter Donnie Jones signed with the St. Louis Rams last week, instead choosing to accept another draft pick as compensation. Miami gets the Rams' seventh-round choice, the 225th overall selection.

Colts

Linebacker and special teamer Rocky Boiman re-signed with Indianapolis. Boiman was an unrestricted free agent after spending last season as key special teams player for the Super Bowl champions.

Patriots

New England and veteran cornerback Tory James have agreed to a one-year deal. The 33-year-old will compete for playing time in a deep Patriots secondary. James has played 11 NFL seasons.

Packers

Green Bay receiver Koren Robinson will finish a jail sentence by serving the final 45 days on electronic monitoring and working at a local hospital. Robinson was sentenced to 90 days in jail for fleeing police in August in Minnesota when he was with the Vikings. He began serving the sentence March 9 at a facility near Minneapolis.

Chiefs

Kansas City re-signed veteran defensive tackle James Reed to a three-year contract. Reed, a free agent, started 15 games for Kansas City in 2006.

Elsewhere

Electronic Arts Inc. picked Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young to be on the cover of its "Madden 2008" title, the latest version of the best-selling sports video game in history. Young, who was the National Football League's offensive rookie of the year last season, said he isn't worried about the so-called Madden Jinx. The past six NFL players on the cover missed games the following season because of injuries.
