Ramp love is rampant at festivals

In addition to this weekend's ramp festivals in Greene County and in Richwood, W.Va., celebrations are ramping up all over. Here are a few:

April 27-29 -- 17th Annual Ramp Cook-off and Festival in Elkins, W.Va. (Friday dinner, from 4 to 8 p.m., is $8, $5 for children; visit www.randolphcountywv.com/rampfestival.htm or call 1-304-636-2780).

April 29 -- Westline Inn Leek Festival in Westline, McKean County, featuring a leek buffet and the popular Leek Dip Contest. Co-owner and co-chef Jonathan Pomeroy promises, "Your breath will end up smelling like your dog's, so if your date eats leeks, you better eat some, too." May 5 -- Bradford StinkFest in McKean County from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a dip contest, other leek cuisine and outhouse races (1-814-368-3173, ask for Kathy Colman).

May 5 -- Ham and Leek Dinner at the Eastfork Sportsmen's Club in Wharton, Potter County. Menu includes all the leeks you can eat, scalloped potatoes with ham, homemade bread, vegetables, salads, pies and cakes and beverages. (1 to 5 p.m., $7 per person, 814-647-5469).

May 12 -- Germania Fire Co. Ham and Leek Smorgasbord, state Route 144 just south of Galeton, Potter County. This 55th annual feed features raw and cooked leeks plus ham, salads and desserts (starts at about 4 p.m., about $8 per person, 1-814-435-6348).
