Multimedia presentation by Gabrielle Banks and Steve Mellon
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Take a behind-the-scenes trip with the sheriff's deputies, judges and jail guards who handle the 55,000 suspects who pass through the Allegheny County Jail each year in four multimedia presentations. This series shows what it's like to get arrested, go to jail, be charged with a crime and then finally get your day in court.

In the introduction, Gabrielle Banks explains how the stories were gathered and reported. Each day's segment will guide you through the experience of getting busted. New segments will become available at midnight on the days indicated.

Read the stories

Sunday: A knock on the door, and you're under arrest

Monday: Jail is 'not a place you want to have to come and stay'

Tuesday: At arraignment, shackled inmates hear the charges they face

Wednesday: Inmates cross the Bridge of Sighs to await their day in court

Online resources: Criminal justice Web sites for state, Allegheny County
