Suzie McConnell Serio is the new women's basketball coach at Duquesne University, sources confirmed yesterday.
Duquesne will make an official announcement today naming McConnell Serio, a two-time Olympian, All-American point guard at Penn State and successful coach at Oakland Catholic High School and the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx.
McConnell Serio replaces Dan Durkin, who resigned last month after a 176-217 record in 14 seasons.
McConnell Serio spent 31/2 seasons with the Lynx and led them to the playoffs twice and was coach of the year once. At Oakland Catholic, her teams won three PIAA and five WPIAL Class AAAA championships in 13 seasons.
She played in the WNBA from 1998-2000 for the defunct Cleveland Rockers.
Duquesne athletic director Greg Amodio, who did not return phone calls the past two days, headed a search committee that quickly narrowed the list of candidates to four: McConnell Serio, Duquesne assistant Mike Iuzzolino, Xavier assistant Kristin Cole and Maryland assistant Joanna Bernabei.
McConnell Serio met with Amodio and university president Charles Daugherty earlier this week and was the only candidate to be called back for a second interview. She also met with university officials yesterday to complete the negotiations.
All the candidates were interviewed last week.
Iuzzolino, Cole and Bernabei were told yesterday they would not be hired.
