Lifeguard certification set

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross is accepting registration for a four-day certification course for prospective summer lifeguards.

The course begins April 26 at the Henry Memorial Center/Natatorium on East Chestnut Street on the Washington & Jefferson campus.

Candidates must be at least 15 years old, able to swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl (100 yards), breaststroke (100 yards) and 100 yards of either the front crawl or breaststroke or a combination of the two. They also must be able to dive to a depth of up to 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object and return to the starting position within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Candidates must register by April 24. The cost is $175 and is nonrefundable.

Already certified lifeguards can take a review course at the same site. The review course costs $160.
