South Park graduate Sean Strauman has been named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference male indoor track athlete of the year in balloting by the conference's coaches.

Strauman, a junior at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, won the 800-meter run at the PSAC indoor meet and then placed second at the NCAA Division II meet, the top finish for any conference athlete at nationals. He broke the PSAC meet record with a time of 1:52.82 and then shattered his own conference mark by posting a time of 1:50.62 at nationals.

He finished less than a second away from claiming the national championship in the 800 while earning All-American accolades for the third time in his career. He was eighth at the 2006 indoor meet and seventh at the outdoor championships last spring.

Strauman has won the 800 at all five of the PSAC meets in which he has competed, including three indoor titles and two outdoor victories.

All-American effort

Peters Township graduate Liz Earley became the first athlete in Allegheny College history to earn All-American honors in a weight throw event.

Earley, a junior, finished fifth at the NCAA Division III indoor track and field championships, which were hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

Earley, who came into the meet owning a school-record toss of 52 feet, 31/4 inches, bested her personal mark by 3 feet on Friday, tossing the 20-pound weight 55 feet, 8.25 inches in her third attempt.

She becomes the first Gators All-American in the weight throw since its inclusion as a championship competition in 1996, and she is the first Allegheny competitor to earn national honors in any indoor throwing event.

USC graduate honored

Upper St. Clair graduate Jamie Allenbaugh was named to the first team of the All-Independents Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball all-star team.

Allenbaugh, a senior center at Flagler College in Florida, averaged 15.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, while shooting a team-high 45.6 percent from the field.

She was the team's leading scorer and rebounder in 17 of the 29 games this season. Allenbaugh also surpassed the 1,000-point and 500-rebound career milestones this season.
