Girls' Fabulous 5 Girls' Coach of the Year Best of the best: girls' Girls' All-Section teams

The Post-Gazette goes up close with this season's best girls.

Jaleesa Sams, Player of the year
School: New Castle.....Year: Sr.
Pos: Forward/Guard
Ht: 5-11
College: Signed with North Carolina A&T.
The skinny: The reigning Post-Gazette Player of the Year, Sams is the perfect mixture of grace and power. Using her inside-outside ability, she finished her career with 1,918 points. This season, Sams averaged a double-double with 19.5 points and 12 rebounds per game for the WPIAL Class AAAA champions. She finished her career with 1,146 rebounds and, in four seasons as a starter, New Castle won 20 or more games each year.
What do you take away most from your career? Winning the WPIAL this year. It was the second time and doing it as a senior is the greatest feeling you can have.
Favorite place to eat:Quaker Steak & Lube.
What actor or actress would play you in a movie: Denzel Washington
Something, or some person, that bothers you in life (pet peeve): When people are chewing gum and they snap it.
Last movie you saw/rented? "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie."
People might be surprised to know that you ...: I like to read.

Shayla Scott
School: Gateway
Year: Sr.
Pos: Guard/Forward
Ht: 6-0
College: Signed with Pitt.
The skinny: A versatile threat on offense and one of the WPIAL's top defenders, Scott finished her career with 1,462 points and fueled a resurgence with the Gateway girls' program. Scott, who was coach by her mother, Jennifer Bruce Scott, averaged 18 points and 8.2 rebounds this season to go along with a total of 62 blocks and 30 steals.
You are going to Pitt next year. How much did coach Agnus Berenato weigh into that decision? I love her. She was so compatible with me and Pitt had everything I wanted from a school and a basketball program. But, as for Coach B, she was a huge factor.
Favorite place to eat: Dave & Buster's.
Favorite TV show: "Oprah" and "Grey's Anatomy."
What actor or actress would play you in a movie:Sanaa Lathan from Love and Basketball.
Last artist/song you downloaded: Lil' Wayne. I downloaded the whole album.
People might be surprised to know that you ...: I do a lot of goofy stuff. The biggest thing, though is that I sing really loudly in my car.

Ashley Henderson
School: Greensburg C.C
Yr: Sr.
Pos: Guard
Ht: 5-10
College: Signed with Pitt.
The skinny: A player who can bury the jumper and also has a penchant for getting to the basket, Henderson scored 1,725 career points for the Centurions and led them to the WPIAL Class AA title each of the past two seasons. This year, she averaged 17.8 points per game, 5.6 assists and 4.3 steals per game in helping her team to a 23-7 record.
The most memorable moment from your high school career was ...: Probably winning the WPIAL two years in a row.
Favorite place to eat: My family's restaurant. Lakeview Lounge in Greensburg.
Favorite TV show: "Grey's Anatomy."
Last artist/song you downloaded: Carrie Underwood's song "Wasted."
Last movie you saw/rented? "What Women Want."
People might be surprised to know that you ...: I can never answer this question. Hmmm. Well, I guess that I am shy, that's the answer.

Erica Prosser
School: Oakland Cath
Year: Sr.
Pos: Guard
Ht: 5-8
College: Signed with Lehigh.
The skinny: A floor leader in the truest sense of the word, Prosser started for the Eagles from the midway point of her freshman year and was a pivotal component in her team going 107-18 during her time in an Oakland uniform. She finished her career with 1,151 career points and averaged 14.7 points per game this year. In addition, Prosser averaged 4.6 assists, 4.1 steals and 3.9 rebounds this year.
Your father (Craig) and brother (Gavin) are both tremendous players. Did you really have any choice? I guess not. Basketball has always been a big part of our family and I have been playing since I can remember. It just has always been really important to us.
Favorite place to eat: My house. My mom's ham, cheese and potato casserole is the best.
Favorite TV show: "Grey's Anatomy."
What actor or actress would play you in a movie: Everyone jokes and says I look like Cameron Diaz, so I guess it has to be her.
People might be surprised to know that you ...: That's hard, I don't know. I guess I say my superstitions. I always put on my right sock first and then my right shoe. I just always do that.

Vanessa Abel
School: Southmoreland
Year: Sr.
Pos: Guard
Ht: 5-6
College: Committed to West Virginia.
The skinny: Abel is the first basketball player from Southmoreland -- boys or girls -- to be named to the Post-Gazette Fab Five. She finished her career with 2,327 points, leading the WPIAL in scoring through this regular season at 28 points per game. Abel's personal success translated to team success, as on her shoulders Southmoreland won its first section title and playoff game this season.
Did you ever think you'd be considered the best girls' player in your school's history? I knew I was going to come in and be a good player. But I never thought I'd make history like I did.
Favorite place to eat: Olive Garden.
What actor or actress would play you in a movie: Allen Iverson.
Something, or some person, that bothers you in life (pet peeve): People who talk a whole bunch of trash but then won't play me or guard me when we play their team.
Last artist/song you downloaded: "Rock Yo' Hips" by Crime Mob.
People might be surprised to know that you ...: That I played soccer in high school for all four years.
