McKees Rocks resident Shaunna Ambrose, a Vincentian Academy graduate , was named to the first team of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball all-star team.
Ambrose, a senior at Niagara University, was a second-team selection last year.
A 5-foot-10 guard, she led the MAAC in overall scoring (17.3) and in league-only games (18.1). She also ranked first in overall free throw percentage (.745), fifth in steals (1.7), and seventh in 3-pointers (1.54). Ambrose scored 20-or-more points in 11 games and produced two 30-point outings.
Swinging a hot bat
Blackhawk graduate Drew Aniceti was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Baseball Player of the Week.
Aniceti, a junior second baseman, led California University to three victories last week. He batted .667 (4-for-6) and added three walks, three stolen bases and an RBI triple.
While sweeping a doubleheader against Gannon and winning a single game over Salem International, Aniceti carried a stellar .778 on-base percentage.
Hopewell grad honored
Hopewell High School graduate Virgil Marshall was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week.
Marshall, a junior at Washington & Jefferson College, won the long jump at the Emory Invitational with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 23 feet, 3 inches.
He also placed sixth in the 100 and eighth in the 200, while helping the Presidents 400-meter relay team to a fourth-place finish with an ECAC-qualifying time of 44.18.
