Altmire pushing 'country of origin' tags at call centers
Wednesday, April 04, 2007

U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-McCandless, will be in Cranberry today to promote a bill that would require all call center employees to identify their location -- be it Pennsylvania, India, or elsewhere -- when they talk to customers.

The "Call Center Consumer's Right to Know Act," introduced in Congress last week, would help Americans understand the extent of job outsourcing in today's economy, argued Mr. Altmire, a member of the House Education and Labor Committee. He likens the requirement to a "country of origin" tag on clothing or other items.

Southwestern Pennsylvania employs about 20,000 at customer service centers, according to Mr. Altmire's office. Telephone and computer-based customer service operations generically known as call centers have been identified as a growth industry in the Pittsburgh region by local economic development officials.
