Latrobe plant to brew Samuel Adams beer
Tuesday, April 03, 2007

The Latrobe plant that formerly brewed Rolling Rock will soon be brewing Samuel Adams.

The Boston Beer Co. announced today it will contract out production of an undisclosed amount of its beer to City Brewing, the LaCrosse, Wis., company that purchased the plant last year. Boston Beer said it will invest $3 million to $7 million in the Latrobe brewery so it can accommodate the proprietary yeasts and extended aging time its brewing process requires.

Boston Beer also said it is considering taking an ownership interest in the facility.

"This partnership ensures that Latrobe's historic brewery will be back up and running and is the first step in building a thriving and vibrant operation in Latrobe on a long-term basis," said City Brewing Chief Executive Officer Randy Smith.

City Brewing purchased the brewery from InBev, which had sold the Rolling Rock brands to Anheuser-Busch for $82 million. City Brewing also intends to produce energy drinks, flavored malt beverages and other drinks at the plant.

The state gave City Brewing $4.5 million in aid in January and has promised more than $7 million in additional assistance.

Employment at the facility is projected at 250 within three years.
