West Virginia basketball coach John Beilein has received an offer to become the new coach at the University of Michigan, and according to three published reports last night, he has accepted.

The Detroit Free Press, Foxsports.com and CBSsportsline.com reported that Beilein will become the new coach of the Wolverines and that a news conference was expected tomorrow. Beilein could not be reached for comment.

"We cannot confirm the national media reports regarding coach Beilein," WVU athletic director Ed Pastilong said in a statement. "We will have no further comment at this time."

This is the second year in a row that Beilein, 54, considered leaving West Virginia. North Carolina State tried to hire Beilein last year, but could not negotiate a buyout of his contract, which was $3 million at the time.

If Michigan did hire Beilein, the Wolverines paid the $2.5 million buyout ($500,000 for each season remaining on his West Virginia contract).

Michigan is looking to restore its basketball tradition after six seasons under former coach Tommy Amaker did not produce an NCAA tournament appearance.

In five seasons at West Virginia, Beilein has a 104-60 record and led the Mountaineers to two NCAA tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight in 2005. The Mountaineers were 27-9 this season and won the National Invitational Tournament last week.

In 29 seasons as a head coach, Beilein is 551-318. He has been the coach at Erie Community College, Nazareth, LeMoyne, Canisius, Richmond and West Virginia. Beilein has never spent more than five seasons at any of his Division I jobs. He just completed his fifth season with the Mountaineers.
