Tuesday and Wednesday: Point Park University Poetry Series, reading and class by poet Jan Beatty, 7 p.m. Tuesday, and 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, both at Hopkins Auditorium, second floor, Thayer Hall.

Wednesday: Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series. Lecture titled "The Death of the 'Poetic School,'" 2:30 p.m. at University of Pittsburgh, Cathedral of Learning Room 501. Readings by Cole Swenson and David St. John, 8:30 p.m. at Frick Fine Arts Building Auditorium, Oakland.

Saturday: Poetry Without Walls 11th annual Open Reading, 8 p.m. at Garfield Artworks, 4931 Penn Ave.

April 10 and 11: Poet Jim Daniels reads his work at 8 p.m. April 10 at the Sphinx Cafe, Oakland., and has a book signing at 4:30 p.m. April 11 at the Carnegie Mellon University Bookstore.

April 11: The International Poetry Forum presents Pulitzer winner and former U.S. poet laureate Ted Kooser, 8 p.m. at Carnegie Library Lecture Hall, Oakland. $12; students/seniors, $8.

April 12: East Liberty native Joseph Bathanti, creative writing instructor at Appalachian State University, reads at 7:30 p.m. at the Massey Theater, Robert Morris University, Moon. Rune, the university's literary magazine, is the sponsor.

April 16: Carnegie Mellon and CAPA students celebrate National Poetry Month with the reading of a work produced for publication in a joint project of CMU student mentors and CAPA students. 7 p.m. at CAPA Black Box Theatre, Downtown.

April 16 and 17: Carnegie Mellon University Drama Department and Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh present "A Multiplicity of Voices: A Celebration of National Poetry Month." 6 to 7 p.m. both days, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Oakland.

April 17: Poets and musicians perform in a fund-raiser at 6 p.m., Club Cafe, South Side, for Pittsburgh-born poet James Deahl. Readings by Romella D. Kitchens, Judith Robinson, Frank Correnti, Rina Ferrarelli and Michael Wurster. Must be 21; donations appreciated.

April 20: Gist Street Reading Series presents poet Jason Schneiderman, author of the collection, "Sublimation Point." Fiction writer Kellie Welles will also read. She's a Flannery O'Connor Award winner and teaches at Washington University in St. Louis. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. at 305 Gist St., Uptown. $5 at the door. Borders Books features the poetry of Christine Telfer and Vincent Zepp. at 7:30 p.m., at Borders, Centre and Highland avenues, East Liberty.

April 20-21: 27th annual James Wright Poetry Festival, Martins Ferry, Ohio, with poets Stephen Dobyns, Judith Vollmer and Gibbons Ruark. To register, 740-633-0314 or www.eastern.ohiou.edu/events/jwright.

April 22: Squirrel Hill Poetry Workshop reading with:

Marilyn Bates, Anita Byerly, Erin Garstka, Nancy Esther James, Marc Jampole, Marijane Wilson McNulty, Christine Doreian Michaels, Randy Minnich, Pam O'Brien, Rosaly DeMaios Roffman, Michael Schneider and Shirley Stevens. Squirrel Hill Branch, Carnegie Library, 5801 Forbes Ave. 2 p.m.

April 30: Benefit reading for Autumn House Press at the Schenley Park Visitors Center, Oakland, 5:30 p.m. Reading poetry will be actor David Conrad. For tickets, 412-381-0217.

Poetry Month on the Web

Farrar, Straus & Giroux presents a blog, The Best Words in Their Best Order, this month. It presents poets reading their own works and the poems of others, all suitable for downloads. Site: www.fsgpoetry.com.

Alfred Knopf's Web site, www.knopfpoetry.com, offers e-mail subscriptions for its Poem-A-Day message. It now has 37,000 subscribers and also offers downloads.
