BRADENTON, Fla. -- Another lousy outing for Tom Gorzelanny?
Not exactly.
The Pirates' most disappointing starter of spring training was charged with two runs and four hits in the 5-3 victory against the Minnesota Twins this afternoon at McKechnie Field. Nothing special there, but he struck out eight and walked one while showing by far his best stuff and command.
On top of that, he rarely was hit hard. Even Chris Heintz's solo home run in the second inning needed a healthy gust of wind to land beyond the left-field fence.
Not bad for a guy who entered with a 9.45 ERA.
"Thank God the spring's over," Gorzelanny said.
He had given up two runs in the first inning of each of his previous three starts, so it looked like more of the same when Minnesota scored yesterday on two singles and a walk. But he gave up only two hits in the next five innings.
"Everything was working," Gorzelanny said. "I was making pitches, keeping the ball down in the zone for the most part. I made one pitch I would change, and that was on the home run."
The Pirates' offense was mostly quiet. Minnesota starter Ramon Ortiz held them scoreless with one hit through four innings, and they were hitless in the next three innings.
With the reserves in the game -- for both sides -- the Pirates scored five times in the eighth, getting RBI singles from Shaler native Dan Schwartzbauer, Richland native Neil Walker and Brian Bixler.
John Wasdin pitched a perfect seventh, and Damaso Marte gave up an unearned run in the eighth.
Closer Salomon Torres, facing his first save situation, put down the ninth while walking one.
The Pirates are 12-16-3 and end Grapefruit League play tomorrow against Minnesota.
