BRADENTON, Fla. -- Dan Kolb will not make the Pirates' bullpen.

Management informed him late last night that it would not place him on the 25-man roster by the midnight deadline stipulated in his minor-league contract, and Kolb will exercise his right in that contract to declare free agency today.

If Kolb had been added, he would have made $1.25 million in base pay and a maximum $1.3 million in performance bonuses.

His elimination apparently clears the way for two other right-handers, Jonah Bayliss and John Wasdin, to take the final two spots in the bullpen. Those certain to be part of it: Salomon Torres, Matt Capps, Damaso Marte, Shawn Chacon and Juan Perez.

Kolb, 32, pitched a scoreless fourth inning yesterday in the Pirates' 5-5 tie with the Philadelphia Phillies at McKechnie Field, displaying his best velocity and breaking ball of the spring. He walked two.

In 9 1/3 innings, he had a 2.89 ERA with three strikeouts, nine walks and eight hits.

Earlier in the day, the Pirates optioned reliever Marty McLeary -- 0-2 with a 6.92 ERA in 13 innings -- to Class AAA Indianapolis.

The roster is at 29, not counting Kolb and injured reliever Masumi Kuwata, and the 25-man limit must be reached by 3 p.m. Sunday. Tracy did not rule out it could take that long to finish it off, but more cuts are expected today.
