Chacon avoids injury on line drive in Pirates' 5-5 tie
Thursday, March 29, 2007

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Shawn Chacon had quite rude awakening early in the Pirates' 5-5 tie with the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon at McKechnie Field.

Michael Bourn's line drive on the third pitch of the game struck Chacon in the chest and ricocheted up to his chin. That felled him momentarily, but he went on to pitch three innings while giving up four runs.

"It was pretty scary, but I got lucky," Chacon said.

Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell took Chacon deep in consecutive at-bats in the third.

Jason Bay had his best game of the spring, doubling his RBI total to six with run-scoring doubles in his first two at-bats. He drove in Ronny Paulino in the first with a shot off the fence in left-center in the first, then drove in Chris Duffy and Jack Wilson with a two-run gapper to right in the second.

Adam LaRoche and Brad Eldred followed the latter with RBI doubles to put the Pirates ahead, 5-4.

Eldred went 1 for 3 with his 11th walk, ranking ninth in Major League Baseball in that category.

Dan Kolb, whose fate will be decided today because of a contract clause that allows him to declare free agency if not added to the roster, threw with as much velocity and bite as he has all spring and struck out Rod Barajas while pitching a scoreless fourth. But he also walked two.

Juan Perez followed and kept his ERA unblemished for the spring by getting Chase Utley to ground out and striking out Howard and Burrell.

Jonah Bayliss gave up the tying run in the seventh, having his first subpar outing of the spring. He went 1 2/3 and allowed two hits and two walks.

The game was called after nine innings.

Tom Gorzelanny will try to lower his 9.45 ERA tomorrow at McKechnie Field against the Minnesota Twins.
