SARASOTA, Fla. -- Zach Duke, in his final tuneup for opening day, gave up back-to-back home runs by Adam Dunn and Edwin Encarnacion in the Pirates' 6-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds today at Ed Smith Stadium.
That brought most of the damage against Duke, who went six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits and one walk. He finished his spring 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA.
"Zach Duke did fine," manager Jim Tracy said.
The Pirates led, 3-1, entering the bottom of the sixth when Dunn and Encarnacion led off by going deep.
Cincinnati broke the 3-3 tie in the seventh with three runs off reliever Marty McLeary. He gave up three hits and a walk.
Closer Salomon Torres pitched a scoreless eighth, allowing one infield single, to shake off a horrific outing Sunday when he failed to retire the first five batters he faced.
"It's the first time all spring where I felt like I had my sinker under control," Torres said. "And that's good. This is the time. We're getting close for the bell to ring."
Among the offensive highlights: Jose Castillo went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk, the latter just his second of the spring. Leadoff man Chris Duffy went 2 for 4, including a bunt single. Humberto Cota went 2 for 3 with an RBI, raising his average to .375. And Brad Eldred continued to bolster his case to make the roster with a double and walk in his two plate appearances.
"We did a lot of good things at the plate today," Tracy said.
The Pirates, 11-16-2, face the Philadelphia Phillies tomorrow at McKechnie Field, with Shawn Chacon starting against J.A. Happ.
