Can you pick the morphed composite?
Sunday, March 25, 2007

Researchers at Iowa State University asked four students to look at a target photo and then each construct a composite drawing of it after a delay.

The experimenters then took the four composites and morphed them together to create a fifth composite.

Target photo
The researchers then asked a separate group of students to look at four somewhat similar photos and try to match one of the composites to the correct target photo that the original group had viewed.

After evaluating several such experiments, the researchers found that students were able to match the individually-done composites to the correct target photo only 35 percent of the time, but were able to match the morphed composite to the correct target photo 48 percent of the time.

Which composite do you think best matches the photo above?

Did you guess correctly? Here's the morphed composite.
