PG EAST: Schenley graduate honored

Schenley graduate Gerald Brooks has been selected as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division Men's Basketball Rookie of the Year.

Brooks, a freshman at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, was also voted to the second team of the PSAC West all-star team.

Brooks averaged 12.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game during the past season. He led the Crimson Hawks in those categories as well as field goal percentage at 54.8 percent (136 of 248) and steals with 26.

A 6-foot-5, 220-pound forward, he started 26 of IUP's 27 games and scored in double figures 20 times, including each of the final nine games of the year. He had season highs of 18 points (twice) against Wheeling Jesuit and Lock Haven and 15 rebounds against Kutztown.

Brooks added four games with 17 points and had 14 or more points 12 times. He pulled down 13 rebounds against Wheeling Jesuit and Penn State Greater Allegheny and 12 against Pitt Johnstown and Lock Haven.

Brooks finished the year ranked fourth in the PSAC-West in rebounding and field goal percentage and ninth in scoring. He led IUP in scoring 14 times and in rebounding on 19 occasions and was the PSAC West Rookie of the Week eight times during the season.

Only Stephen Dennis of Kutztown, the PSAC East Rookie of the Year, had a higher scoring average than Brooks among first-year players.

PAC all-star selections

Three Westmoreland County residents have been chosen to the Presidents' Athletic Conference women's basketball all-star team.

Hempfield Area graduate Emilee Ackerman and Greensburg Central Catholic grad Maggie Gibson were honored by the PAC. Ackerman, a 5-8 junior at Westminster College, was voted to the first team. Gibson, a 6-1 freshman forward, was voted to the second team.

Greensburg Salem graduate Laura Klimchock was also recognized on the PAC women's team, even though Saint Vincent College is a provisional member.

Plum's Koch a PAC man

Plum High School alumnus John Koch was named to the first team of the Presidents' Athletic Conference men's basketball all-star team.

Koch, a senior at Washington & Jefferson College, was a first-team selection.

Cal standout is PSAC star

Butler Area High School graduate Kim Nowakowski was named to the first team of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women's Basketball All-Star team for the second straight year.

Nowakowski, a 6-foot-2 junior forward, led California University of Pennsylvania to a 21-9 record and a second-place finish in the PSAC Western Division.

For the second consecutive year, Nowakowski led the Vulcans in scoring (16.6 points per game), rebounding (11.1 per game) and blocked shots.

She leads the PSAC in rebounding and is among the top 15 in NCAA Division II in that category.

A three-year starter for the Vulcans, Nowakowski is already ninth on the team's career scoring list (1,240) and seventh on the rebounding list (803).

A PAC first-teamer

North Catholic graduate Katie Lewandowski was named to the first team of the NCAA Division III Presidents' Athletic Conference women's basketball all-star team.

Lewandowski is a 5-4 senior guard at Waynesburg College.
