College Basketball Roundup: Pitino, Louisville No. 2 seed in Big East

Edgar Sosa scored 18 points to lead five Louisville players in double figures and the 16th-ranked Cardinals (22-8, 12-4) defeated Seton Hall (13-16, 4-12), 86-71, at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky., to clinch the No. 2 seed in the Big East Conference tournament.

The Cardinals earned a bye in the first round and will play the winner of the West Virginia-Providence game at 7 p.m. Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament.

The Pirates, who failed to make the tournament, got a career-high 29 points from Brian Laing.

Other men's highlights

Tyler Hansbrough had 26 points and 17 rebounds before suffering an ugly injury in the closing seconds of No. 8 North Carolina's 86-72 victory against 14th-ranked Duke (22-9, 8-8). The Tar Heels (25-6, 11-5) clinched the top seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. ... Joakim Noah and Taurean Green scored 17 points apiece and No. 5 host Florida (26-5, 13-3) rebounded from consecutive losses to become the first Southeastern Conference team to win six in a row against Kentucky (20-10, 9-7), 85-72. ... Anthony Tolliver had 15 points and 13 rebounds and Creighton (22-10) upset No. 11 Southern Illinois (27-6) to earn its seventh NCAA tournament appearance in nine years with a 67-61 victory in the Missouri Valley championship in St. Louis.

Women's highlights

Jessica Davenport scored a season-high 32 points, including all seven of Ohio State's points in overtime, to rally the No. 5-ranked Buckeyes (28-2) past fifth-seeded Penn State (15-16), 73-71, in a Big Ten tournament semifinal at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Kamela Gissendanner led Penn State with 21 points. ... Ivory Latta scored 20 points, becoming North Carolina's career scoring leader, and the fourth-ranked Tar Heels (30-3) ended North Carolina State's emotional run through the ACC tournament with a 60-54 victory against the No. 24 Wolfpack (23-9) in the final in Greensboro, N.C.

IUP is seeded third, California fifth and Pitt-Johnstown seventh in the NCAA Division II East Region women's tournament, which begins Friday at Glenville State, W.Va. On the men's side, California plays West Liberty State in the first round at Barton College in Wilson, N.C.
