District tournament roundup: It's a first for Westminster
Wednesday, February 28, 2007

The Westminster Titans, a longtime NAIA power, will make their first appearance in the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament since they moved to that level in 2000-01.

Westminster (18-8), which received an at-large bid, will play tomorrow at John Carroll (19-9) in the first round of the tournament. The top-seeded Titans lost in the semifinals of the Presidents' Athletic Conference to eventual champion Grove City, 86-67.

Westminster and John Carroll, the runner-up in the Ohio Athletic Conference, are high-scoring teams with contrasting styles. Westminster relies on the 3-pointer to generate an offense that averages 87 points per game. The Titans shoot 35 percent from beyond the arc, averaging 12.3 3-pointers made on 35.2 attempts per game. Craig Hannon (12.7 ppg) leads the way with 73 3-pointers.

Westminster's other starters are Greg Rosatelli (15.1 ppg), Dom Joseph (12.5 ppg), Nick Adams (12.1 ppg) and Steve Bielich (12.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg).

John Carroll's Blue Streaks, who average 80.7 points, prefer a strong inside attack with 6-foot-5 Brandon Mimes (20.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 45 blocks) and 6-3 Terry Walsh (15.9 ppg, 6.0 rpg).

In quarterfinal games tonight involving district teams in the Division III ECAC Southern Championship tournament:

No. 6 seed Carnegie Mellon (12-12), which has lost six consecutive games, will play at No. 3 Lebanon Valley (14-11). The Tartans feature 6-5 Ryan Einwag (15.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg) and 6-0 Geoff Kozak (11.3 ppg). The Flying Dutchmen are led by 6-3 Jimmy Curran (19.0 ppg).

No. 8 Grove City (16-12), which won the PAC tournament, plays at No. 1 Penn State Behrend (19-8), the runner-up in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. Behrend boasts 6-7 center Kevin Buczynski (18.2 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 40 blocks); Grove City's chief threats are 6-0 Ryan Gibson (12.3 ppg) and 6-1 Shawn Carr (11.1 ppg, 5.8 rpg).

No. 5 Bethany (19-8), which lost in the semifinals of the PAC tournament, plays at No. 4 Juniata (16-11), the runner-up in the Commonwealth Conference. Juniata defeated Bethany, 76-64, earlier this season in the championship game of the Doc Greene tournament. Bethany's top scorer is 6-4 James Wallace (15.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg) and Juniata's only double-digit scorer is 6-5 Brian Cannon (14.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg).
