Troy Dolan of Derry Area takes pride in winning a fourth WPIAL Class AA wrestling championship, but understands this is not his highest goal.
"It seemed like when I got some momentum going, they were stopping it," Dolan said. "It's a pain in the butt. It was tough to really get going like I wanted to."
Dolan advances to the Southwest Regional tournament in Johnstown, the next step in his ultimate goal of winning a third state championship.
"I never really thought about it [winning four WPIAL titles] until this week when everybody was talking about it," Dolan said. "It's kind of a big deal to a certain point, but I'm really getting more focused on winning states. I know winning a WPIAL title is what I need to do if I want to get there [to the PIAA tournament]."
Two three-time champions were also crowned. Kory Bissett (12-0) of West Greene edged Devon Maloney of Burrell in the 140-pound finals, 2-1, in overtime. Bissett has missed most of the season with a left shoulder injury. The shoulder was heavily taped last night.
Burrell's Jordan Shields (35-4) also won his third WPIAL crown, pinning Ty Basinger of Jefferson Morgan at 130. Shields won three WPIAL matches by fall or technical fall. Shields' teammates Shane Welch (39-1) and Damian Majocha (38-5) won their second district crowns. Welch topped Dominick Demor of South Side Beaver in the 135 finals, 3-0. Majocha claimed a 6-4 overtime decision over Charlie Wonsettler of Bentworth at 171.
Shady Side Academy had two freshmen remain unbeaten. Frank Martellotti won his 35th match after a 10-7 decision over Brian Scritchfield of Jeff-Morgan in the 103 finals. Also, freshman Matthew Cunningham (21-0) of Shady Side edged returning champion Jesse Byerly of Keystone Oaks, 3-2, in overtime at 145.
Phil Sorrentino (36-1) claimed South Allegheny's first WPIAL title, scoring an 8-0 major decision over Tucker Conklin of West Greene at 152.
In the 285-pound final, Myles Caragein of Keystone Oaks (34-0) edged Mount Pleasant's Paul Snyder (35-4), 2-1, in overtime. Caragein, a Pitt football recruit, is responsible for every one of Snyder's losses, all one-point decisions.
City League
Team tournament champion Brashear dominated the individual qualifying tournament for regionals yesterday at Carrick.
The Bulls advanced six competitors to the Northwest Class AAA Regional tournament in Altoona Friday and Saturday. Four of their finalists won championships: Freshman Jonathan Hanna at 103 pounds, freshman Damian Link at 112, junior Joshua Perri at 125 and senior Daniel Duffy at 135. Perri is a repeat champion.
The highlight of the finals was Allderdice senior Harry Decarme winning his fourth City League crown at 140. Decarme is the third wrestler to win four City titles and the first since Mike Shaw of Carrick in 2000.
Also notable was no Carrick wrestler reaching the finals. It is the first time in the 19-year history of the event that the Raiders did not have at least one City League champion.
Other repeat champions were Stefan Wiedenhoffer of Langley at 145 and Giancario Gaston of Perry at 215. Jahill Jones of Allderdice was shooting for a third consecutive title at heavyweight. However, he was upset in the finals at 285 by Grover Walker of Peabody by a third-period pin. Jones lost despite holding a 12-3 lead early in the third period.
