Boys' playoff roundup: Albert Gallatin upsets top-seeded Moon

Jawaan Alston came close to a triple-double yesterday and helped Albert Gallatin stop Moon's run of championships at a triple.

Alston, a 6-foot-8 senior forward, had 24 points, 15 rebounds and 9 blocked shots as Albert Gallatin upset Moon, 80-73, in a WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinal at Canon-McMillan.

Moon was the No. 1 seed for the Class AAAA tournament and was trying to become only the second team to win four consecutive WPIAL boys' championships. The first three were in Class AAA.

Aaron Cromwell and Nate Turner added 17 points apiece for Albert Gallatin. Junior guard Brian Walsh led Moon with 29 points, including three 3-pointers.

Albert Gallatin will play in the semifinals for only the third time in school history. The last time was 1986, when Albert Gallatin was a Class AA school.

Pine-Richland 40, Norwin 36: Junior guard Brett Matson scored 26 points to lift Pine-Richland to the victory at Plum. Pine-Richland (17-7) will play in a semifinal game for only the third time in school history. Matson was 5 of 6 from the free throw line in the final 50 seconds. Pine-Richland needed Matson's big offensive effort because Eric Duerr, a 6-8 senior who averages 13 points, did not score. Mike Shanahan led Norwin (22-4) with 17 points.

Bethel Park 68, Mt. Lebanon 48: A strong defensive effort enabled No. 2-seed Bethel Park (23-3) to turn back the defending WPIAL champion Blue Devils (17-9) at Canon-McMillan. Mt. Lebanon's Andrew Devlin, who averages 13 points, was held to four. Guard Shane Phillips scored 12, but none in the first half.

Senior guard Tim Picard led Bethel Park with 17 points and senior forward Andy Vukela added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Class AA

Beaver Falls 81, Carlynton 72: Beaver Falls (19-8) stopped Carlynton's 13-game winning streak and earned a spot in the semifinals for the sixth consecutive year by winning at Ambridge. David Phillips had 26 points and Todd Thomas 19 for Beaver Falls. Martin Pletz scored 29 points for Carlynton (21-4).

Northgate 47, North Catholic 27: Northgate (20-6) held North Catholic (15-11) to its lowest offensive output of the season at Chartiers Valley. The win puts Northgate into the semifinals for the first time since 1988. Jon Valeriano scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half for the winning Flames, who made 20 of 25 free throws while North Catholic made only 5 of 18.

Aliquippa 95, Monessen 64: Aliquippa (24-2) scored more than 90 points for the second consecutive game and breezed to the win at Woodland Hills. Aliquippa guard Antonio Reddic had 27 points and nine rebounds, Herb Pope 25 points and 11 rebounds and Jonathan Baldwin 19 points.

Monessen guard Josh Arnold, the WPIAL's leading scorer, was held to 16 points, 15 below his average. It was his lowest output of the season.

Jeannette 81, Shenango 62: Jeannette's Terrelle Pryor had a triple-double as the Jayhawks (20-3) breezed past Shenango (19-7) at North Hills. Pryor had 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Jordan Hall added 17 points and 10 assists.
