Fire guts Wilkinsburg church
Saturday, February 24, 2007

A four-alarm fire gutted the interior of a Wilkinsburg church and an adjoining fellowship hall today, as groups of parishioners watched from snowbanks along the residential hillside street.

No one was injured in the blaze, said Captain James Reagan of the Wilkinsburg Fire Department. In less than two hours after the fire was reported at 10:30 a.m., Wilkinsburg and Pittsburgh firefighters had it under control. He said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage. The Allegheny County fire marshal was investigating.

The Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian Church, at 1604 Graham Blvd., was founded in the late 1940s by Reverend Calvin Cummings of Oakland, according to church elder Michael Berkenpas. It currently has a congregation of about 120 parishoners from surrounding communities. Pastor Jack Wilson, who has led services for 17 years, said he thought the fire appeared to have started near the stove in the kitchen of the one-story fellowship hall. He said the church office, formerly a parsonage, was spared.

Pat Lawry, of Penn Hills, looked bewildered as she watched crews extinguish the last of the flames at the church, where she has attended services for about 40 years. "At least it's just the buildings and not any people," she said.

A game night for youth to be held tonight was cancelled. Sunday services will be held at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the library of Trinity Christian School, 299 Ridge Ave., in Forest Hills.
