If last week's crop of upcoming new models didn't spark your hobby habit, check out this group of automotive collectibles for the new year.
Franklin Mint has a blue 2007 Mustang GT500 coming out that will be the only 1:24 scale model that I know of this car. They've also got a Guardsman Blue 1964 Ford Mustang convertible that's trimmed out with most of the options available on the real car that year.
Jeep fans will find the new Renegade CJ-7 to be a treat, with features such as a front windshield that tilts forward, removable doors and a roof that lifts off. And there's a very nice rose-colored (Sunset Coral) 1956 Thunderbird that sports a brown and white interior and hood and doors that open.
Meanwhile, the real story of the year may be unfolding at Maisto, maker of well-detailed, modestly priced models. While RC2 is getting out of the collectibles business, Maisto is jumping in with gusto, introducing a lengthy list of new models.
In 1:18 scale, look for a Porsche Cayman, Lamborghini Gallardo coupe and convertible, BMW M5 sedan, Chrysler Crossfire, and plenty of others.
In 1:24, the star of the line may be the all-new Chrysler ME Four Twelve Concept model, a popular car that a lot of modelers have been waiting to get their hands on. Others include new versions of the Ford Fusion SEL and Scion xB. You'll also see a new 1970 Dodge Challenger RT hardtop and an 2006 Mustang GT Coupe.
For many model car collectors, Exact Detail replicas are considered among the creme de la creme of the hobby. These 1:18 models are extraordinarily well done with wired and plumbed engines, detailed chassis and the usual features: working doors, hoods, trunks and wheels.
They're back again this year with Lime Green, Acapulco Blue and white versions of their 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500. They're also introducing a Gulf Turquoise 1967 Pontiac Firebird 400 Convertible and yellow and orange versions of the 1970 Olds 442 W-30 Convertible.
