Two 15-year-old McKees Rocks boys were held for trial following a preliminary hearing in Pittsburgh Municipal Court yesterday on charges they were involved in a Jan. 17 brawl over a stolen iPod that ended with two other young men wounded, one of them five times.
The suspects, Deandre Reed and Mackenzie Dotson, were held by District Judge Robert P. Ravenstahl on two counts of aggravated assault, and single counts of conspiracy and a weapons charge. Mr. Reed, identified in testimony as the shooter, also was charged with two counts of attempted homicide.
Also, the two men faced charges related to stealing the iPod on Jan. 16 that provoked the brawl and shooting the next day. Mr. Dotson was held on robbery, theft and weapons charges but all theft-related charges lodged against Mr. Reed were dismissed when witnesses testified that, while he was with Mr. Dotson, he did nothing to facilitate the crime.
One witness, James Ritenour, 17, was involved in both incidents. Needing crutches to walk because of his gunshot wounds, Mr. Ritenour testified that on Jan. 16 he was with his friend, Joseph Hatherly, 19, of McKees Rocks in an alley near Broadway when Mr. Dotson pulled a gun and robbed Mr. Hatherly of his iPod.
The next day, Mr. Ritenour testified, he was walking with three other men in the 400 block of Broadway when they encountered Mr. Reed and Mr. Dotson and others on the porch of a house. A fight broke out between the groups of men. Mr. Ritenour said it ended when Mr. Reed and Mr. Dotson ran back onto the porch and Mr. Dotson handed Mr. Reed a gun.
"He said, 'I'll shoot you. I'll shoot you,' and I said 'Go ahead, shoot me,' and then he did," Mr. Ritenour said.
Another of the men with him, Michael Hatherly, 17, of McKees Rocks, was wounded in the calf.
