Martin "John" Reinhardt, a multitalented machinist and woodworker, was an avid skier who enjoyed the slopes and trails at Seven Springs Mountain Resort.
He was skiing there Saturday afternoon when he collided with a snowboarder near the bottom of North Face, an expert slope on the back side of the resort. He slid head first into the base of a snowmaking tower wrapped with a black vinyl pad containing 2 inches of foam and then slid a little farther down the slope.
The ski patrol, the first responders to injured skiers, notified the crew of an on-site ambulance and requested a helicopter. Mutual Aid Emergency Medical Services of Greensburg, which stations an ambulance at the resort on weekends and holidays, drove Mr. Reinhardt from the bottom of the slope to a helipad in the northeast parking lot.
He was flown to UPMC Presbyterian. He died there late Wednesday night. The Allegheny County medical examiner's office said the cause of death was head injury and ruled the death an accident. Mr. Reinhardt, 43, of Pittsburgh's Arlington section, was not wearing a helmet.
It was the third ski fatality in the 70-year history of the resort.
"John was a safe skier who never had a ski injury," said a brother, Michael Reinhardt of Virginia Beach, Va. "He took no extraordinary chances. He wanted to enjoy life, not fly through it like a bat out of hell."
Mr. Reinhardt described his brother as a "very experienced skier" who took up the sport in the mid-1980s.
"He enjoyed skiing, usually at Seven Springs. He'd drive up there for the day and then come home.
"He took life one day at a time," he added. "He was an easygoing person, someone you would really welcome as a friend. He was a very talented woodworker and carpenter who enjoyed making and refinishing furniture. He was a jack of all trades and a master of every one of them. You name it and he could do it."
Michael Reinhardt said the family was told a snowboarder hit his brother. The ski patrol said the snowboarder, who wasn't immediately identified, stopped, got off his board and went to see if he could help the victim.
"Our entire staff is saddened by this accident, as John was once a member of our extended family of season pass holders," said Scott Bender, chief executive officer of Seven Springs. "Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and friends."
In addition to his brother, Mr. Reinhardt is survived by his father, Thomas, of Arlington; brothers Matthew of Brentwood and Mark of Arlington; and three sisters, Michelle McArdle of Bethel Park, Mary Kay Shatzer of Baldwin Township and Melissa Reinhardt of Goodyear, Ariz.
Friends will be received from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday at John F. Slater Funeral Home, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday. Mr. Reinhardt was cremated and his ashes will be spread at a destination of his choice.
The family suggests contributions to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 810 River Ave., Pittsburgh 15212.
