Allegheny County Health Department publishes free insurance guide
Thursday, February 15, 2007

As debate continues on the need to improve access to health insurance, the Allegheny County Health Department has published a guide on resources available to local residents with little or no coverage.

"Uninsured or Underinsured? A Guide to Healthcare Resources in Allegheny County" lists local clinics and health centers that provide care on a sliding-fee scale. The free 17-page guide also lists resources that could help with prescription drug, dental and transportation needs.

"There are resources out there, but not everybody knows about them and the system is difficult to navigate," said Jessica Seabury, executive director of the Consumer Health Coalition.

Fran Chervenak, managing attorney for the Pittsburgh office of the Pennsylvania Health Law Project, said people who lack insurance can face challenges if they need treatment from specialists or hospital care. Charity care policies often vary from hospital to hospital, she noted.

The guide is available at www.achd.net or by calling 412-247-7816.
