CLASS AAAA

TOP SEEDS: Moon is first, Bethel Park second, Fox Chapel third and Norwin fourth.

THE WINNER WILL BE: Bethel Park. The Black Hawks were the preseason No. 1 team and still good enough to win it all, mainly because of their defense (44.5 points).

SLEEPER: Central Catholic. The Vikings beat Moon earlier this season and they have two talented players -- Joe Berenato and Chris Saltzman -- to carry them.

THE SKINNY: There is no overwhelming favorite in this classification. Moon has a star in junior point guard Brian Walsh, who has a number of Division I scholarship offers, including one from Pitt. But what makes the Tigers hard to defend is their balance. Walsh averages only 15.8 points. ... Fox Chapel and Pine-Richland are playing well and are teams to watch. Fox Chapel's fortunes will depend greatly on how well it shoots 3-pointers. Pine-Richland could make some noise because it has a big man -- 6-8 Eric Duerr (14.3 ppg). ... Section 1 didn't get much respect in the seedings, with three teams seeded in the bottom four spots -- Latrobe, Hempfield and Franklin Regional. Section 1 is 1-11 in first-round games the past three seasons. ... Here's a possible quarterfinal matchup that would be interesting: Fox Chapel vs. Central Catholic.

CLASS AAA

TOP SEEDS: Greensburg Salem is first, Highlands second, Chartiers Valley third and Hampton fourth.

THE WINNER WILL BE: Chartiers Valley. The Colts are peaking, winning 14 of their past 15. Senior Mike Sherry is the WPIAL's second-leading scorer (25.5 ppg), but a key could be how well sophomore point guard Eli Maravich plays.

SLEEPER: Ambridge. The Bridgers were 11-1 in very competitive Section 2.

THE SKINNY: Highlands might have been the No. 1 seed until it lost to Valley this past Friday. Highlands has four players averaging between 13 and 16 points a game. ... A Greensburg Salem-Highlands final would probably be high-scoring as Greensburg Salem averages 71 points a game and Highlands 70. ... This is one of Greensburg Salem's best teams in school history and Paul Matthews is an underrated player, averaging 19.8 a game. But the Lions' section isn't the strongest. Will that hurt come playoff time? ... Blackhawk could make some noise. A number of players are back from last year's team that made it to the semifinals, including Antoine Childs (22.3 ppg). ... Don't forget about Hampton, whose only two losses are to Highlands. ... Watch Montour. Two losses in the final week hurt the Spartans' seed.

CLASS AA

TOP SEEDS: Aliquippa is first, Jeannette second, Carlynton third and Washington fourth.

THE WINNER WILL BE: Aliquippa. The Quips are bigger, stronger, faster and more talented than any team in Class AA. An opponent's best hope might be to play a zone and hope the Quips have a bad night shooting. But even against a zone, Aliquippa can pound the ball inside to 6-foot-9 Herb Pope and 6-6 Jonathan Baldwin. Plus, they have players to slash through a zone with dribble penetration.

THE SLEEPER: Beaver Falls. The Tigers aren't as good as the past few years, but still talented enough to make a deep run into the playoffs. A tough non-section schedule could pay off now.

THE SKINNY: With 6-6 Terrelle Pryor (21 ppg), Jeannette is good enough to make it to the final. The Jayhawks have more than Pryor, though, as guard Davonte Shannon averages 17.5 points a game. ... What should we expect from section champions Carlynton, Northgate, Washington and Shenango? They haven't done much in the postseason in recent years, but the Class AA field isn't as strong as recent years. So, one of them should make it to the semifinals. ... Monessen is in the playoffs for the 26th year in a row, longest streak in WPIAL history, and senior guard Josh Arnold is the league's leading scorer (32.0).

CLASS A

TOP SEEDS: Serra is first, California second, Clairton third and Western Beaver fourth.

THE WINNER WILL BE: Serra. The Eagles have been impressive, even when stepping up in class. Their only two losses were to Class AAAA McKeesport (53-49) and Class AAA Blackhawk (71-66). Serra also defeated two Class AAA playoff teams (West Mifflin and Yough) and two Class AA playoff teams (North Catholic and Summit Academy). Serra averages 74 points a game, the second most in the WPIAL.

SLEEPERS: Leechburg and Duquesne. They tied for the Section 4 title. Duquesne knows playoff success, having played in the title game the past two seasons and 10 times since 1992. Leechburg has a potent one-two punch in Nick Matviko (20.1 ppg) and Stephen Predebon (18.0).

THE SKINNY: Some were surprised Clairton was not seeded No. 2. The Bears have a number of players returning from a WPIAL championship team and two of their losses were to Serra. They got a late start to the season because most of their players were on the school's football team that made it to the PIAA semifinals. ... California comes from a weak section, but the Trojans create matchup problems with 6-7 Mike Hrivnak and 6-5 Travis VanOlst. Guard Chris McVicker averages 18 points.
