WPIAL basketball playoff meeting postponed
Tuesday, February 13, 2007

The WPIAL has postponed its basketball playoff pairings meeting until tomorrow.

The league was scheduled to release playoff matchups and seedings tonight at a meeting in Moon but decided to postpone because of the snowstorm. The playoffs for boys and girls are scheduled to begin Friday night.

The WPIAL considered releasing the pairings today on its Web site, and then conducting the meeting tomorrow night, but nixed the idea. A couple hundred coaches, athletic directors and other school officials usually go to the playoff pairings meeting.

"If we release just the pairings today, then we know a lot of people will not show up at the meeting tomorrow night," said WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley. "We need to administer this tournament. We need people at the meeting to pick up their tickets and go over some other things."

With the meeting pushed back a day, some teams will find out their first-round opponent tomorrow night and have only one practice to prepare.

"I know some coaches are going to complain about that, but there's not much we can do about it," Mr. O'Malley said. "We have to have some games on Friday night in order to get the first round in by Tuesday of next week."
