As the snow continued to come down across the region today, universities and Allegheny County courts closed early and schools canceled night activities.
The Pittsburgh Public Schools and nearly all suburban districts already closed early today in anticipation of the accumulation.
The Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium announced it would close at noon today and remain closed tomorrow because of the weather. It planned to reopen Thursday. The National Aviary on the North Side also closed at noon but plans to reopen tomorrow.
Point Park University canceled classes this afternoon, as did Duquesne, Carlow, Community College of Allegheny County and Chatham. The University of Pittsburgh canceled classes as of 4 p.m. and said they would resume at noon. West Virginia University canceled evening classes.
President Judge Joseph James this afternoon ordered all Allegheny County Common Pleas Court divisions and local district judge offices to close as of 2 p.m.
Regional weather radar indicates snow is falling across eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, eastern Maryland and Western Pennsylvania.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning in effect until 6 p.m. tomorrow. The snow may mix with sleet by late this afternoon and continue into early tomorrow morning. Isolated freezing rain also is possible.
Snow may be heavy at times today and tonight with 4 to 8 inches across the southern portions of the region by tomorrow afternoon, and 6 to 10 inches possible to the north.
