Learn to make moss baskets and party too
Making flower arrangements is much easier when you've got a professional at your elbow. Making one at a party with food and drink is even better.
Chapon's Greenhouse in Baldwin Borough will show you how to make a combination moss basket at after-hours garden parties scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 22 and 24.
The cost is $50 per person and includes basket, materials and refreshments. Additional baskets may be planted for $40 each. Attendees also get a preview of this year's plants and accessories. Reservations: 412-881-1520.
Phila. Flower Show in March
The Philadelphia Flower Show, the largest indoor show in the region, is scheduled for March 4 to 11 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The theme this year is "The Legends of Ireland." Christopher Woods, a former executive with Chanticleer in Wayne, Pa., will design the displays.
The show features more than 10 acres of gardens, flowers and entertainment. Tickets are $28 for adults on opening day, $26 on weekends and $24 on weekdays. Children ages 2 to 12 are $13 any day. Advance tickets are available online at www.theflowershow.com and are $22 for adults and $12 for children ages 2-12.
Private tours of the show before it opens to the public are available March 5-9. Make reservations by calling 215-988-8775. The package includes a guided tour, celebrity flower arranging presentation, one-day discount pass for the Flower Show Shoppe, and one additional general admission ticket. The cost is $105 per person.
Arborist exam course
The International Society of Arboriculture has created a certificate program to prepare arborists for the ISA Certified Arborist exam. The course is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 23, March 2, March 9 and March 16 at the Penn State Greater Allegheny campus.
The class will cover proper pruning; diagnosis of plant diseases and insect pests; nutrition and fertilization; selection and installation of trees and shrubs and other topics.
