The Experts: Rating the top recruiting classes

One month after winning the national championship on the field, Florida's recruiting class is ranked as the best in the country. Says who? Every scouting service from Rivals.com, to scout.com, to Super Prep, to Tom Lemming to Prep Star.

So it's clear Urban Meyer can coach -- and recruit.

"When you look at their class, they have great players at every position," said Tom Lemming, a nationally known scout who appears on CSTV.

Florida signed eight players ranked among the top 50 in the country by Super Prep magazine. Included in that group are two receivers, two defensive linemen, a defensive back, an offensive lineman, a tight end and a quarterback. The highest-rated player is Deonte Thompson, a receiver from Belle Glade, Fla., who is Super Prep's No. 10 player nationally.

"The thing about Florida," said Bobby Burton of rivals.com "is they went into Maryland and got a top player there, a top player in Indiana, a top player from South Carolina and Connecticut and a top player from New Jersey and Georgia."

Allen Wallace of Super Prep said: "You can't say Florida had a great class because they're right in the state of Florida where a lot of players are. Look at Florida State, they're one of the biggest recruiting stories of the season because they're not doing well. They probably won't even be in the top 25. Miami isn't in the top 10. So that tells you being in Florida doesn't guarantee a great class."

The teams with the best classes behind Florida are Southern California, Texas, Tennessee and LSU.

Southern California might have one of the best running back classes of any school in years. Yesterday, Joe McKnight of River Ridge, La., and Broderick Green of Pulaski, Ark., both announced they would sign with USC. McKnight is ranked the No. 1 running back in the country by some scouting services, and Green chose USC over Penn State and Ohio State.

USC also signed Marc Tyler of Westlake Village, Calif., who is ranked the No. 2 running back in the country by Super Prep.

Maybe the biggest surprise in recruiting nationally was South Carolina, ranked among the top 10 by a number of services.

"[South Carolina coach] Steve Spurrier was always known as a game-day coach more than a recruiter when he was at Florida," Burton said. "But he was actually out recruiting himself last spring. That's a big change."

The "gurus" also said Illinois was one of the surprise teams as coach Ron Zook put together a top 20 class, despite not being successful on the field the past two seasons.

North Carolina and new coach Butch Davis finished strong and cracked the top 15 in some rankings.

Notre Dame dropped out of the top 10 in some rankings after the Irish lost a few recruits who had already verbally committed.
