Above right, Stone Brewing Co.'s Old Guardian Barley Wine has just been released and will start showing up in a few area taverns. South Side's Fat Head's, for instance, plans to tap a keg of it on March 1, when the San Diego brewery will be featured starting at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m. on Feb. 28, the Harris Grill in Shadyside will hold a beer dinner with five courses paired with different Stone brews.

The barley wine will be served with the soup (Corn, Turkey, and Carrot Chowder). Brewery sales rep Perry Gray will be on hand, with Harris Chef Matt Butoryak.

Below right, Scott Smith of Homewood's East End Brewing Co. is releasing the second vintage of his barleywine-style ale, which is his only bottled product. Once again, the 2006 version features labels that volunteers print by hand -- all 1,300-plus of them -- at Artists Image Resource on the North Side, then apply by hand at the brewery. The label once again was designed by Mary Tremonte. Mr. Smith, who appreciates all the volunteer support, calls the brew "Gratitude."
