An Allderdice High School teacher surrendered to Pittsburgh police yesterday on charges related to an ongoing sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl he once coached in soccer.
The school district identified the teacher as Ryan Novak, 25, of Beechview, and said he resigned Jan. 19.
He taught industrial arts at Allderdice this year but had coached the girls' soccer team at Schenley High School, police said, where he had previously taught. The girl is a student at Schenley.
Mr. Novak turned himself in to police last night.
Mr. Novak is charged with corrupting the morals of a minor and child endangerment.
Mr. Novak taught at Carrick High School during the 2003-04 school year, at Schenley during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 school years and joined the Allderdice faculty in the fall.
Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki, head of major crimes, said the teacher and girl had an ongoing relationship that began in October.
That ended last month, when her parents found out about it by examining text messages on her cell phone and contacted school officials.
He said school police informed the city's sex assault squad.
Police said the teacher and the girl met at Mr. Novak's home, where they had sex three times.
Mr. Novak was jailed until evaluation by the behavioral clinic. A hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday.
Cmdr. Stangrecki said detectives were still examining cell phone and other records.
