NFL Notebook: Fuhrman latest to go in Steelers' shuffle
Wednesday, January 31, 2007
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has decided not to retain conditioning coordinator Chet Fuhrman, who had a year remaining on his contract.

"I've been here a long time and I wanted to thank Dan and Art Rooney for that. They've always supported me and my programs," Fuhrman said yesterday.

Fuhrman was the only remaining member of Bill Cowher's staff who had been with the Steelers since 1992. No replacement has been named.

Broncos

The autopsy report on Darrent Williams confirmed that he died from a gunshot to his neck early New Year's Day. The report was released yesterday. A medium- to large-caliber bullet struck Williams on the left side of the neck and exited the right, and he died quickly, the report said. No charges have been filed in the case, but police said a man who was arrested on an unrelated parole-violation charge is a person of interest in the case.

Cowboys

Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary has been a motivational speaker, written four books and co-founded a company that provides leadership training since his playing career ended. Yesterday, he made his pitch in Irving, Texas, to succeed Bill Parcells as coach in Dallas. Singletary was the eighth -- and most likely last -- candidate to be interviewed by Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones. Singletary, 48, who retired in as a player after the 1992 season, has only been coaching in the NFL since 2003 -- two years with Baltimore and the past two with the 49ers, where he was assistant head coach. The Cowboys haven't given a timetable for naming their new coach, though an announcement could come as early as today before Jones leaves for the Super Bowl tomorrow.

Browns

Generally, no one wants to go to Cleveland. That is not the case with Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith, who is campaigning for the team to take him in the April draft. Smith is from Cleveland, where he went to school at Glenville High.

"Hopefully, I'll get a chance to represent you guys at the next level with the Cleveland Browns," Smith said Monday night during a taped acceptance speech at the Greater Cleveland Sports Awards. He was named the area's most outstanding collegiate athlete.

Also, tight end Kellen Winslow had arthroscopic surgery to remove scar tissue and repair cartilage damage in his right knee.

Chiefs

Jack Steadman, a member of the franchise's front office since its founding in 1960 as the AFL's Dallas Texans, announced his retirement. Steadman was the general manager when Kansas City won its only Super Bowl title after the 1969 season and will retire today as the Chiefs' vice chairman. "Next to my father, Lamar, no single person has had a greater impact on the Chiefs organization than Jack Steadman," Chiefs chairman Clark K. Hunt said in a statement.

Elsewhere

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, himself an injury replacement, withdrew from the Pro Bowl because of a hand injury he suffered against Indianapolis in the playoffs. Lewis' place on the AFC roster will be filled by teammate Bart Scott.
