Gun drawn and fired in road rage incident
Monday, January 29, 2007

A man from Georgia and another from Texas met yesterday in a road rage incident in which a shot was fired, leaving one injured and the other in jail.

Jeremiah Nichols of Houston and Julius McKinzie of Decatur, Ga., had driven several miles from the Pennsylvania Turnpike exit at New Stanton to the Smithton exit on westbound Interstate 70 at 7 p.m., state police in Belle Vernon said.

Both drivers pulled off the road on the Smithton exit ramp, got out of their vehicles and confronted each other.

During the argument, Mr. McKinzie pulled a pistol and fired a shot into the ground near Mr. Nichols, police said.

Mr. Nichols was not struck by the bullet, but he was slightly injured by the flying shrapnel and asphalt. He was treated at Mon Valley Hospital for a minor laceration of his forearm and released.

Mr. McKinzie was arraigned on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, carrying a weapon without a license, making terroristic threats and reckless endangerment.

He was taken to the Westmoreland County Jail, pending prosecution, police said.
